The author of this web site (Ervin Shaw, M. D.)
has always been interested in being a "help" to others. He (with the authorization of then
hospital president, George I. Rentz) founded the Support Group Network in 1986 (it no longer exists) at Lexington Medical Center (LMC).
I offer the information as a Caucasian Southern
male:
- born into a
Christian family within a town of Judeo-Christian orientation,
- a prodigal son from
the faith for a very important 25 years of my adult life,
- a privately
practicing physician with scientific perspective,
- as one whose life
fell apart in my mind in June 1987 (I was age 42),
- as one who drug his
heels in coming back to the faith, and then
- as one who became
subtly challenged (by the Holy Spirit?) to struggle out & share...on line...in this website...my personal beliefs as to The
Way.
I was born in 1943 in Sumter, S.C., having a
sister 13 months younger. Ancestors beyond 4 generations back on my father's side were slave
holders, while not so on my mother's side. I am the first generation raised off of the farm;
and my father was his family's first college graduate (EE @ Clemson) and worked all of his
life in insurance, utility, & petroleum product sales. My mother was a nurse for 40
years. I have practiced Anatomic, Clinical, and Forensic Pathology at this fine, acute-care,
not-for-profit community hospital continually since July 1975. I am a Citadel class
of '66 alumnus; medical education and residency were at the Medical College of S. C. (MUSC by graduation) in Charleston, S.
C.
LMC has the busiest Emergency Department in South
Carolina, and our group works with a broad and deep cross-section of disease (and has done so
since the hospital opened in 1971). Our 8-doctor pathology group is involved in medical
education at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. And we have regularly
contributed into the published medical literature (but in low volume...we don't have to
"publish or perish").
From 1987-2014, I was president of a private practice pathology
group of 4 male and 4 female pathologists....Pathology Associates of Lexington, P.A., in West Columbia, S.C. (See the LMC
web site, laboratory services department, [our pathologists' photos and brief info.]).
I was chairman of our hospital's Credentials
Committee from 1980-Jan. 2012...always with the hope of helping to assure quality local care to
patients.
Please note the general disclaimer for the entire medical portion
of this web site. After decades in practice, I have a view on a number of topics. Intense
involvement in common female cancer cases and male cancer cases served to encourage putting
information together for an uncle with prostate cancer and a cousin with
non-invasive breast cancer.
These files became the beginning part of the medical area of this (my personal) web site. A
number of patients have interacted in such a way as to spur me to modify the arrangement of
topic files...I appreciate feedback. Nevertheless, I don't hold myself out as an expert...I
just want to make some of the information I actually use "visible" in the hope that it can be
a help.
I believe that my faith in Jesus causes me to want
to be a sharer, a "help", a servant...more...a testimony...on this.
