The
Believer's New Identity
Upon being "born again" (the believer's new
spiritual birth), your position changes from that of a mere sinful human being to that of
being a child of God...one of His saints. This change of spiritually legal position results
in an immediate change in personal identity. Thereafter, in the ongoing battle by Satan with
God to get your soul, Satan takes the saint and tempts, tricks, and confuses the saint into
such things as: (1) lying (though, by new identity, the saint is no longer "a liar"); (2)
cheating (though, by new identity, the saint is no longer "a cheater"); (3) adultery (though,
by new identity, the saint is no longer "an adulterer"); (4) gossiping (though, by new
identity, the saint is no longer "a gossip"); blaspheming (though, by new identity, the saint
is no longer "a blasphemer"); etc. and so forth.
Rev. Tony Evans' July 2002 devotional magazine
carried a series on the new identity. One day the Queen was having problems keeping
her little daughter still, even with many corrections and warnings. Finally, the Queen looked
down at her little girl and said, "Young lady, be still! Remember who you are!" This spoke to
the little girl's identity as a member of the royal family.
Satan knows that if he can keep you from
discovering and being willing to believe in your new identity in Christ, he can hold you
hostage to sin. But, the truth is that the key to your new personal identity as a
born-again Christian...who you are...is always and only in your spiritual
birth.
I Peter 1:3:
KJB: "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord
Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by
the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,"
NASB: "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord
Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope
through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,"
I Peter
1:23:
KJB: "Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but
of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever."
NASB: "For you have been born again not of seed
which is perishable but imperishable, that is, through the living and enduring word of
God."
2 Corinthians
5:17-18:
KJB: "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new
creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. And all things are of God,
who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of
reconciliation;"
NASB: "Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new
creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. Now all these things are from
God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of
reconciliation,"
