A Christian mother filed an appeal last week of a judge’s decision in a custody case that prohibits her from teaching her own adopted daughter the tenets of her faith. Dr. Cheryl Clark — a physician who left a lesbian relationship in 2000 after becoming a Christian and concluding that homosexual behavior was wrong — was ordered by Denver Circuit Court Judge John W. Coughlin in late April to,  "...make sure that there is nothing in the religious upbringing or teaching that the minor child is exposed to that can be considered homophobic."

Coughlin also granted visitation and joint parenting rights to Clark’s former partner, Elsey McLeod, who has no legal relationship with either the daughter or the mother. But he gave no similar instructions to McLeod to avoid passing on her opposition to Christianity to the 8-year-old girl.

"It’s a real one-way street," said Mathew Staver, president of Liberty Counsel  [there are some excellent testimonies on this site] and attorney for Clark. He said the judge’s order effectively prevents the mother from practicing her religion in her daughter’s presence. "[The judge’s warning] has clearly gone beyond the permissible boundaries of courts," he said. "This ruling interferes with her constitutionally granted right to free exercise of religion and her rights as a parent to be able to direct the upbringing and teaching of her own child."
