The year from hell: As a prelude to 1995, they had the years of the chronic stress of raising a son with cystic fibrosis and the press of an intense career as an emergency room physician in one of South Carolina's busiest ER's. In March of 2000, I found out more that had been quietly handled in this family...mostly in one year. In Jan. of 1995, the wife had surgery and radiation for uterine cancer. In March, the doctor underwent his own chest pain work-up followed immediately by a triple coronary artery bypass and 90 days out of work. That Fall, their other 14 year old son was expelled from school...alcoholism! "Ervin, how do you think it feels to go to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting with your young son and hear him introduce himself as 'so-and-so, and I'm an alcoholic' !" The boy spent a year in a wilderness school (doing fine, now), and the other son had a lung transplant and was in college (died in 2002). Floored and not knowing they were Christians, I asked how he and his wife had been able to endure 1995. "Our faith and divine intervention brought us through it."
