Another Special Life in Christ
These testimony lives are not stories of "role models". Jesus is the
role model!
These are lives wonderfully touched & changed by Jesus!
After the fire, the ship
sank:
His real estate investments were a financial
wipeout in the great Chicago fire of 1871. Only a short time prior, he and his wife lost
their only son. The worst was yet to come. In 1873, his trans-Atlantic family trip to Europe
for rest and to help his friend D. L. Moody's evangelistic campaign was threatened with a
last minute business snag. His wife and four daughters departed on schedule; he delayed,
planning to catch up later. Halfway across the Atlantic, the passenger ship was rammed by an
English vessel. Their four daughters were swept overboard, and the ship sank in just 12
minutes (226 drowned). Survivors were taken to Cardiff, Wales; and his wife cabled just two
words, "Saved alone." Lawyer Horatio G. Spafford immediately boarded the next ship to Wales.
As his ship passed the mid-Atlantic zone of disaster, Horatio gazed across the billowing
waves that had taken his daughters. That night in his cabin, the words came to him for a poem
that would later become the great hymn declaring the comforting peace of the
believer,
It Is Well With My
Soul
When peace
like a river attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll,
whatever my lot,
Thou hast taught me to say,
It is well,
It is well with my soul.
A layman and lawyer of medical jurisprudence, here is the rest of the
story of Mr. Spafford...a sad ending. Along with a few friends, Spafford is said to have
established an American Colony in Jerusalem. At age 60 (1888), he died there, having experienced a
mental disturbance which caused him to believe he was the 2nd Messiah. The amazing Wikipedia write up is HERE.
