bulletHe stood up in the blood: Some 400 youth attended a rally and concert in preparation for SYATP (see you at the pole). Among them was a young man whose life had been unraveling...all sorts of troubles, including police run-ins and a pregnant girlfriend. Then he lost his job and was evicted. Looking up from "the bottom", he recalled the boyhood joy of Church. He met a youth pastor who came alongside of him and drew him back to church. At the beginning of the rally, organizers had announced that everyone should be prepared for a big surprise later. The kids weren't sure (around 7 pm) whether to dive under pews or not when Larry Gene Ashbrook slammed through the back door of the church sanctuary cursing Baptists and firing his semi-automatic pistol. Jeremy and his youth-pastor friend dove. Blood from the girl on the floor in front of them rolled toward the pastor. Suddenly infused with a sense of indescribable peace, the young man got up, sat in the pew and prayed in full view of Ashbrook...the pastor pulling on his pant leg. Jeremiah Neitz then stood, on 15 September 1999, to his full height and turned to the shooter and said, "What you need is Jesus in your life. Go ahead and shoot me. I know where I'm going when I die! Do you?" Ashbrook sunk into a pew as if he himself had been shot. Then he righted himself and shot himself dead in the head...in the sanctuary of Wedgewood Baptist Church, Fort Worth, Texas. Three teens and three adults had been killed on the spot, another died at the hospital and a number more were critically wounded (finally 7 youth died & 7 wounded from over 100 rounds from two guns and the blast of one pipe bomb). A large amount of extra ammo was found on him. Jeremy refuses to take any credit, giving it all to Jesus as having worked through him. Can you imagine the worldwide conversations which have had to occur following this...and so many having to consider the name of Jesus!
