Another Special Life in Christ:
Rolf Benirschke:
His Life Before Jesus Came In:
He was born in 1955 and, by his words, raised in a great
family. In the 1977 National Football League draft, 22-year old Rolf Benirschke
was drafted second-to-last by the Oakland Raiders, entering the intensely
high-pressure life of pro football. Soon after, he was part of a deal that sent
him to the San Diego Chargers for his rookie year in the NFL. Once he became a
member of the team, Rolf didn't disappoint the Chargers. He kicked twelve
consecutive field goals, which was a new team record. He noticed that there were
several team members whose lives seemed filled with peace, one being his holder,
Mike Fuller. But their attraction did not turn Rolf off his "rich young ruler"
path in life. So, God allowed a bigger challenge than the constant pressure into
his life.
During the 1978 football season, his second season with the Chargers, Rolf's
health began to decline. He was plagued by symptoms including fever, abdominal
cramps, and diarrhea. At first he thought it was the flu; but, as the symptoms
continued, it was obvious that his illness was more serious. He had a dramatic
hospitalization and colectomy for ulcerative colitis. And his weight dropped
down to only 120 pounds. "But, I stiff-armed Jesus for another 8 years."
His Life Since Jesus Came In:
So, in about 1986, Rolf surrendered his life to the Lordship of
Jesus and asked that He take over his life...then he retired with a career team
scoring record of 766 points.
I watched the San Diego Billy Graham Crusade on WIS TV channel 10 on 12/9/03 and
saw him give a brief "warm up" testimony.
