Another Special Life in Christ

 It cracked her life:

ON A WARM, OCTOBER AFTERNOON, REBECCA HOPE BRINGS HER BOYS HOME FROM SCHOOL. SHE LOOKS LIKE YOUR AVERAGE MOM... "Looks like you need to start on your homework for me, ok?" THE AFTERNOON ROUTINE IN THIS LEXINGTON COUNTY HOME BEGINS WITH AN INSPECTION OF EVERYONE'S SCHOOLWORK. "TYPICAL MOM," YOU THINK? TRY AGAIN. "I am a 27 year old mother of three, and I'm a recovering crack addict."

CRACK...WHAT SOME SAY IS THE MOST ADDICTIVE DRUG ON THE STREETS. REBECCA STARTED USING IT WHEN SHE WAS JUST 18 AND LIVING IN MEMPHIS. "And that was the beginning of the road to hell for me." A ROAD THAT LEFT BEHIND HER TWO PARENTS...AND THEIR SOUTHERN BAPTIST HOME. "Everything that my parents had instilled in me as a child was gone. I had no morals, no values, no nothing!"

REBECCA SAYS CRACK JUST GRABBED A HOLD OF HER...IT'S ALL SHE WANTED IN LIFE...EVEN MORE THAN THE TWO SONS SHE ALREADY HAD. "I was on the streets, and I did what I had to do to support my habit. That's how powerful this drug was over me." REBECCA LANDED IN JAIL. HER HUSBAND STOOD BY HER SIDE. "I'll never forget the day my husband brought my son to visit me in jail...here we go. I was sitting behind the glass, and my son just kept crying, 'Mommy! I want my mommy!' There was nothing I could do...I couldn't hold him. And, if I could take back his pain that day, I would do it in a heartbeat!"

EVEN THOSE CRIES, THOUGH, COULD NOT STOP REBECCA'S ADDICTION...CRACK RULED. SHE WAS ARRESTED A THIRD TIME. THIS WOULD BE THE TURNING POINT. "I got down on my knees in front of everybody. I didn't care. I was so tired..." AND, THEN, ON THE JAIL CELL FLOOR...REBECCA CRIED OUT TO GOD FOR HELP. "From that day...no joke!...from that day I asked God to help me. That was the day that my life changed...absolutely a totally different person!"

THE ROAD TO RECOVERY HAS BEEN HARD...BUT REBECCA SAYS THAT NOW HER SONS ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS IN HER LIFE, NOT CRACK. SHE CREDITS THE TURNAROUND SOLELY TO GOD...AND KEEPS A COPY OF THE LORD'S PRAYER IN HER LIVING ROOM. ONE OF IT'S LINES READS, "LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION BUT DELIVER US FROM EVIL..." REBECCA RESISTED A TEMPTER MANY CANNOT...SHE KNOWS WHY. "There is power in prayer!"

REBECCA HAS BEEN CRACK FREE THREE AND A HALF YEARS NOW (2001). AND SINCE TALKING WITH US...SHE'S DECIDED TO START TELLING HER STORY TO ANYONE WHO WILL LISTEN...SHE WANTS TO HELP OTHERS BREAK THEIR ADDICTIONS.
